Rich Levesque, a 26 year old resident of Town Center, and an 18-month township resident, was appointed the newest member of the township council after the mayor cast a tie-breaking vote filling the seat vacated last month by Tim McGough. He will hold the position until the November 4th election which he intends to run in. Levesque has served on the State Council on Local Mandates until recently, and has served on the township's Open Space Advisory Committee.
Two council members thought Levesque would bring a unique perspective as a resident of the sprawling, upscale development off Route 130. But two other council members didn't think he had adequate experience or had lived in the township long enough.
Two other candidates for the position, Vincent Calcagno, who served for 10 years as a township committeeman and mayor when Robbinsville was still Washington Township, and nine-year township resident Jim Guididas were not present at the council meeting.
Council President Chris Ciaccio said the fact that Levesque lives in Town Center was a plus; no other council member lives there.
Council Vice President William Lesniak and Councilwoman Sonja Walter voted for Guididas. Walter said township seniors had approached her saying they thought it would be wiser to appoint someone who's lived in the township for more than 18 months.
Levesque, who plans on pushing for development along the Route 130 corridor, said he "wants to continue the current progress" he sees in the community. He also wants to strike a balance among open space, farmland and development and help bring in more ratables to keep taxes steady.
